Treasure Hunting at the Flea Market

an old music book and vintage doiliesToday we went to the flea market. It’s something we often do. Flea markets, yard sales, estate sales, rummage sales….I love treasure hunting.

For this trip I had in mind to find some nice buttons, ribbons, lace, junk drawer finds or pyrex, cookbooks. We spent a good while just wandering the isles poking around. I was kind of disappointed because nothing really caught my eye. We were ready to leave and then I spied a box of junk with a couple of old books (I love books too).

Handmade Birthday Card For Mom

handmade birthday card for momThis Handmade Birthday Card For Mom has a featured image of a Harrison Fisher girl holding a puppy. I just love his work. I’ve been getting some more practice making handmade cards. I have some cards I haven’t had a chance to post yet but cycles seem to happen. Going to try and catch up on that.

I didn’t have just the right color to use as the card base so I decided to use a manilla folder. I like to re-purpose things so it was the perfect choice. I also wanted to try some techniques I have seen others use and have admired so I set to having some fun.

The faux typewriter keys spell out HAPPY which forms part of the birthday sentiment. I made them from Continue Reading →

Handmade Ballerina Card

handmade ballerina card  My handmade cards lately have all been for the guys. We have a lot of them in our family. This time I got to create a handmade ballerina card for my granddaughter who loves ballet and modern  dance.  I went on a search for the perfect ballerina to include in my card. I found her here

She was already the perfect color theme so to save some time I used the pre-colored version of the ballerina.  She’s adorable.

I love the color of the pink cardstock. It reminds me of bubblegum. I used Darice embossing folders; basket weave and polka dots to texturize Continue Reading →

The Brown Bobby Doughnut Machine

brown bobby doughnutsThe Brown Bobby Doughnut Machine was marketed as a money making business idea in the 1920’s, 1930’s by the Food Display Machine Corp. Anyone could set up shop or cook these doughnuts from home and sell them.

The Brown Bobby Greaseless Doughnut is a triangular shape with a dense cakelike texture. They are cooked in the Brown Bobby machine which cooks like a waffle iron. Although the doughnuts are not deep fried they do have fat in the recipe so while they are called greaseless they are not fat free. Continue Reading →

Fishing Themed Birthday Card

fishing-theme-card_3The next card I made was for my sons 32nd birthday. He likes to go fishing when he has spare time so a fishing theme was perfect. I had some card stock and patterned paper to work with. The blue scalloped pattern was perfect for use as a water background. I needed another masculine patterned paper  so I created my own in a tan pattern with fishing lures included and printed it out. The fish embellishments I printed out and glued to cardboard, which had been saved from paper pad backing, and cut out with scissors. A “fishhook” (actually a Christmas ornament hook) was a cute way to add Continue Reading →

Mothers Day Card

I didn’t set out to get into handmade cards but as I started gathering crafting supplies that interested me it was obvious I could go in different directions with them.

I wanted to give my mother the first card I made and Mothers Day was perfect timing. I didn’t have colored card stock or patterned papers yet so I used what I had on hand which was white cover stock and also printed my own patterned paper using the cover stock. This gave me the chance to use my new toys; a  lace edger paper punch and Sizzix Bigshot embossing and diecut machine to emboss a layer to fancy things up. Continue Reading →

Starting Again

Lately I have had the urge to set up a blog again. Not being one to keep up with blogging, my first couple of attempts went dry pretty quickly and postings would be far and few between. But, I have taken up a few new interests and I thought that might motivate me to post more often.

What I’ll post about are my new crafting interests and other things I like….mostly vintage items and books.

I have a few things in the fire and card making is one of my new interests. I find enjoyment working with my hands and making cards feels like a natural companion to working with my graphics programs, digital images, layers and textures. Card making came to the forefront first because there were occasions where I could practice the craft and give my creations to loved ones.

I can pretty much blame my new found crafting interests on Continue Reading →
